If a fire or another covered loss makes an Atlantic City apartment unlivable, replacing belongings may not be the first expense. You may need a place to stay, meals away from home, and extra travel while repairs are made. Renters insurance often includes an additional living expense or loss-of-use section, but its trigger and limit deserve a close read.
Check when the benefit starts
Ask whether the policy requires a covered property loss and what evidence is needed to show the apartment cannot be lived in. A building closure or inconvenience alone may not meet the policy’s definition. Review the waiting period, dollar limit, and time limit. The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance guide describes additional living expenses as one of the protections in home and renters insurance.
Understand what counts as an extra cost
Additional living expense coverage generally addresses the increase over your normal living costs, subject to policy terms. Ask how hotel or short-term rental charges, meals, laundry, pet arrangements, and extra commuting are handled. Keep regular rent and utility costs documented as a baseline. Do not assume every temporary purchase will be reimbursed.
Keep a simple claim file
Save receipts and a dated list of where you stayed and why. Photograph damage before cleanup when safe and report the loss promptly. Keep messages from the landlord or building manager, but coordinate insurance questions directly with your insurer. If you share the apartment, confirm whose policy pays for each person and whether all residents are insured.
Review belongings separately
Loss of use is not a substitute for personal property coverage. Check the belongings limit, valuation method, and deductible, and keep a current inventory. Ask whether flood or another excluded cause would also leave the temporary housing costs outside coverage. New Jersey notes that standard policies exclude flood, so discuss separate flood protection if appropriate.
Prepare before a move is forced
Peak Insurance’s Atlantic City insurance page and renters quote form can start a review of your living arrangement and limits. Actual coverage depends on the insurer and policy.
