Savannah Home Inventory: A Practical Insurance Record Before a Storm

Make the record before you need it

A Savannah household can lose track of what it owns long before a storm or fire makes a list urgent. A home inventory gives you a practical starting point for a claim conversation. Walk room by room, photograph belongings, and record a short description, approximate purchase date, and receipt or serial number when available.

Include the easy-to-miss items

Open drawers and closets. Add kitchen equipment, tools, electronics, outdoor furniture, and belongings kept in a garage or storage area. Document valuable collections or jewelry separately and ask whether policy sublimits apply. A photo is useful evidence, but it does not itself increase your coverage limit.

Georgia’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire recommends proof of what you owned before a natural disaster. It also advises reviewing policies for storm, wind, and flood protection. A standard home policy generally does not cover flooding, so discuss a separate flood policy if that exposure matters to your property.

Store and review the inventory

  • Keep a copy outside your home or in a secure cloud account.
  • Update the list after large purchases or major changes.
  • Check the personal property limit and how belongings are valued.
  • Ask which expenses a covered loss would reimburse and what deductible applies.
