Start with what the standard policy says
A Dallas household may assume an engagement ring, watch, or collection is fully included in home or renters insurance. Read the policy’s limit for jewelry and the causes of loss it covers. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that policies may cap payment for certain valuables, including jewelry. That limit can be lower than the value of a single item.
Ask about listing items individually
Scheduled personal property or a separate valuables policy may provide different limits and terms for named items. Ask what proof of value is required, which kinds of loss are covered, whether a deductible applies, and how a claim would be settled. Compare the description and value on the schedule with the item you actually own.
An appraisal or receipt can help support the amount of coverage to buy, but it is not a guarantee of a particular claim payment. Review values periodically, especially after a significant purchase or inherited item.
Keep a simple valuables file
- Photograph each item from several angles.
- Save receipts, appraisals, and identifying details.
- Store copies somewhere secure outside the home.
- Update the policy when an item is sold, changed, or added.
